Ancestral and Natural Exploration from Saraguro
Itinerary of the Qhapaq Ñan & Oñacapac Excursion
Panoramic views of Saraguro and San Lucas.
We start our adventure early in the morning, leaving Saraguro in a private vehicle and accompanied by a certified guide. We will drive along the old Panamerican Highway towards the limits between Saraguro and Loja.
Along the way, we will witness spectacular scenery that includes birds, pastoral landscapes and the majestic primary forest that nourishes Saraguro with its crystalline waters, all framed by panoramic views of Saraguro and San Lucas.
Ingapirca Archaeological Site
Leaving the vehicle, we will begin our exploration on foot along a trail that will take us to the archaeological site of Ingapirca de Saraguro, where the ancient carved stones of the Inca empire are hidden among the vegetation. From here, we will follow in the footsteps of the Incas by walking along the Great Qhapaq Ñan, an ancestral route that will lead us to the community of Oñacapac.
Hiking the Qhapac Ñan
Along the way, we will connect deeply with nature, surrounded by vibrant local vegetation and passing through cattle pastures that reflect the daily life of the region. The endemic orchids, with their delicate beauty, will invite us to appreciate the unique richness of this environment. During a break, we will share a picnic lunch in harmony with the landscape, a moment to feel part of the land before continuing on to the community that awaits us.
Community Connection in Oñacapac
In Oñacapac, we will meet the living history of the local bottled water venture “Andina”, a project that connects the community with the pure mountain springs. The hosts, with warmth and pride, will share their story as we enjoy the freshness of this water flowing directly from the heart of nature. To close a day full of meaningful connections, we will return to Saraguro to enjoy a traditional dinner at the Tupay restaurant, located in the emblematic central square, a space that reflects the cultural and culinary essence of the region.
Route Map
This map illustrates the route of this unforgettable day: we leave by vehicle from Saraguro to Cerro de Torre, followed by a hike from the Cerro to the community of Oñacapac, a walk of approximately 2.5 hours. Finally, we return by vehicle from Oñacapac to Saraguro. Warning: The hike is at high altitude, so it is essential to be well acclimatized, stay hydrated and take precautions if you are not used to the altitude.
